SC has the second highest percentage of hungry people in the
nation. Serving as a link between local
farms and community organizations that help feed the hungry, Fields to Families
gleans both fields and leftovers at local Farmers Markets. The goal of Fields
to Families is to deliver these gathered fresh crops to food pantries, soup
kitchens, Meals on Wheels, shelters and churches to feed hungry people.. While most organizations feed the hungry with
canned and packaged goods, Fields to Families focusses on improving the
nutrition of hungry citizens in our area by coordinating the distribution of
fresh, healthful produce – fruits and vegetables. Even though fruits and
vegetables are considered the foundation of a healthy diet, hungry people
almost never have access to them. Volunteers for Fields to Families are
mobilized to farms and other areas to gather the fresh fruits and veggies for
distribution; but don’t worry, green thumb or no green thumb, volunteers of all
kinds are needed! In addition to volunteers traveling from site to site, Fields
to Families is starting a large garden (farm) in Moncks Corner on donated property
to grow their own food! For more information, and to learn how you can
volunteer, visit http://www.fieldstofamilies.org.
